Geology & soil...

We don't have a Geologist in our midst or possess the required knowledge to describe accurately what lies immediately beneath our feet, except to say that the streams area is positioned immediately below an elevated part of the village. The numerous streams that flow through here are fed in the most part by ground water that has drained off the slope and accumalated at the bottom, only to surface once again in the form of springs. Village history indicates that prior to drainage, the area at the foot of the slope was once part of a large fen.

This view looking south east across the snow fields and former fen towards Rickinghall, clearly shows the high ground in the lea of which are the numerous water courses mentioned in the taxt above.
